Asia Pacific leads growth in canned food market, says report

The Asia Pacific region is the world’s fastest-growing regional market for canned food, according to a 2026 market research report.

Asia Pacific is forecast to record the fastest growth between 2026 and 2033, as expanding modern retail and convenience store networks make canned products increasingly accessible in metropolitan and tier-two cities.

Rapid growth in digital grocery platforms is also increasing product visibility and expanding distribution.

Published by Persistence Market Research, the report identifies urbanisation, rising workforce participation and growing demand for convenient, shelf-stable foods among the primary factors driving consumption across the region.

The report said dense urban populations and longer commuting patterns were increasing demand for products that reduce preparation time and allow more consistent meal planning. Rising workforce participation is adding to that trend.

At the same time, manufacturers are adapting formulations, portion sizes and flavour profiles to domestic dietary preferences, while investment in local production is improving supply reliability and reducing dependence on imports. Investment in processing automation, packaging efficiency and shelf-life optimisation is also supporting greater production scale.

The regional trend forms part of continued expansion in the global canned food market, which is valued at USD137.5 billion in 2026 and forecast to reach USD179.7 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate of 3.9%.

Metal cans continue to dominate packaging for the sector and are forecast to account for more than 60% of canned food market revenue in 2026. The report attributes their position to durability, extended shelf life and protection during transport, as well as compatibility with automated filling and sealing systems.

The recyclability of metal packaging is also identified as an advantage as food producers and retailers place greater emphasis on sustainability. Standardised can formats offer further benefits in storage, stacking and inventory management.

By product category, canned vegetables are expected to remain the largest segment, accounting for approximately 28% of market revenue in 2026. Canned seafood, however, is forecast to record the fastest growth through to 2033, supported by demand for protein-rich foods and developments in preservation and packaging.

Packaging innovation is expected to contribute to that growth, with easy-open and portion-controlled cans identified as helping to increase the convenience and appeal of canned seafood products.

In the wider market, manufacturers are also responding to demand for healthier products through reduced-sodium, reduced-sugar and preservative-free formulations, alongside fortified and clean-label alternatives.

Product innovation, sustainable packaging and the continuing expansion of modern and digital retail in developing economies are identified among the key opportunities for the canned food sector through to 2033.
