August 5: An almost 300 million drop in the shipments of food cans in the US in the second quarter contributed to a 1.9 percent decline in total can shipments, according to the latest figures released by the Can Manufacturers Institute.
But shipments of beer cans are still on the rise, increasing by 2.5 percent in the three months to the end of June to reach 9.1 billion cans. Demand for soft drinks cans is still sliding, falling 2.6 percent to 17.9bn compared with the same quarter in 2008.
