January 29: Ball Corporation’s acquisition of a number of US beverage canmaking plants last year contributed to a significant jump in sales volume in the final quarter and added a welcome increase in after-tax profits for 2009.

Rising US food can sales and a strong final quarter for European beverage can sales also added a shine to the results published yesterday. Chief executive David Hoover (pictured) said he expected 2010 earnings to be above those for 2009.
