Botswana’s first canmaking plant opened

September 1: The economy of the southern African state of Botswana is expected to be boosted by its first canmaking plant.
The food can plant at Lobatse is operated by Can Manufacturers Botswana, which was established by Botswana Development Corporation (BDC).
It will supply the Botswana market as well as neighbouring countries – BDC says it has received orders from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mauritius, and hopes to export cans to Namibia and overseas.
The plant has started with one line supplied by Cantec, part of the Swiss Soudronic Group. Production is around half a million cans a day in three sizes: 73 x 110mm, 65 x 102mm, and 52 x 89mm.
