Can-Pack takes bigger share of metal crowns

March 14: Poland’s top canmaker Can-Pack has boosted its metal crown production capacity with the acquisition of France’s market leader – and could soon threaten Pelliconi, the biggest maker of crowns in Europe.
Can-Pack Metal Closures, a subsidiary of Can-Pack, has bought Tapon France based at Saint Marcel, near Paris, from Mexico’s Zapata Group.
“The acquisition of Tapon France SAS is part of the strategy of Can-Pack group to build a crown cork holding, whose production capacity and scope of operation shall secure flexibility of supplies of crown closures to customers in all of Europe,” said Can-Pack. The value of the deal was not revealed.
Europe’s drinks manufacturers use 80 billion metal crowns a year. Of these, 20bn are supplied by Pelliconi, which also ships 5bn out of Europe. But Can-Pack now has crown capacity of 20bn.
