Jamaica’s leading canmaking firm could be forced to shut its operations after becoming unintentionally entangled in new legislation that outlaws the export of scrap metal.
Crown Packaging in Kingston, like all manufacturers of three-piece tinplate cans, uses welders that consume copper wire which is chopped up for reprocessing. The Jamaican canmaker uses overseas service providers.
The new legislation was targeted at thieves who have been stealing metal products for export.
