Twenty-two years after the first two-piece beverage can was made in Brazil, canmakers are racing to keep pace with demand in one of the world’s fastest growing markets. Mónica Higuera reviews their business

Brazil is one of the fastest-growing markets for two-piece drinks cans in the world and barely two decades after the first aluminium cans were introduced, the market is expected in 2011 to exceed 20 billion units for the first time. To meet this demand, canmaking capacity in Brazil estimated to reach more than 26 billion cans by April 2012.
