Crown's World Cup SuperEnd wins Can of the Year 2010

November 12: Winner of The Canmaker magazine’s Can of the Year for 2010 is the Event Can, developed for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and featuring a full-aperture easy-open end.

The award was presented at a gala dinner held during The Canmaker Summit last night in São Paulo, Brazil.

Designed by Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East using its lightweight SuperEnd technology, objective was to use the ends on a limited edition of Castle Lager, distributed by South Africa Breweries through bars in the tournament stadia in tinplate 33cl and 44cl cans made by Nampak in South Africa – with SAB tracking the response of consumers.

The brewer first approached Paris-based Crown Bevcan in 2008, and after discussing various solutions it was decided to fit full-aperture (FA) easy-open ends onto the cans, so that they could be used like drinking cups.

Development of the FA version of the SuperEnd involved 18 months of trials in which Crown exploited its expertise in food and beverage end manufacturing to meet SAB’s requirements.
