Digitally-printed drinks cans to make their debut

April 15: Three thousand cans of beer made for a corporate celebration are the first commercial application for digital printing techniques used by Ball Packaging Europe (BPE).

So-called drop-on-demand digital printing, developed by BPE and UK company Tonejet, makes such a short run economic because the printing process removes the need for plates, and is a technique being widely adopted in the paper printing world.

Similar developments will be highlighted by INX International Inks at the Cannex canmaking technology convention being held in Las Vegas from April 27-29.
