South Korea’s Dongwon Group has appointed Choi Young-jo as chief executive of its US canned seafood subsidiary StarKist. Young-jo was formerly financial chief at Starkist.
According to Dongwon Group, StarKist is the world’s largest supplier of canned and packaged tuna.
Young-jo is a recent graduate of Yonsei University, Seoul, with a degree in business administration. He has also completed an MBA programme at Manchester University in the UK.
Young-jo joined StarKist as finance chief last year after working at the accountancy firm Deloitte as head of internal audit. His other positions include director of Asia financial planning at Tesco in Asia, and global finance chief of SPC Group’s North America subsidiary.
Dongwon acquired StarKist from Del Monte in 2008. The subsidiary is reported to have annual sales of around US$765 million.
“Amid uncertain business conditions caused by a slowdown in US consumption, Choi, who possesses a deep understanding of the US market and extensive experience in various business sectors, will lead the sustainable growth of StarKist through management efficiency,” said Dongwon Group.
