European aerosol container production holds steady

European aerosol container production held steady at 5.2 billion units in 2023, according to the latest figures from the European Aerosol Association (FEA).

In its latest annual report, the FEA noted that the UK, Germany and France accounted for over 55% of Europe’s annual aerosol can production across all segments. In collaboration with Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain collectively produced more than 4bn aerosol dispensers in 2023.

In terms of categories, cosmetics and household products represented more than three-quarters of European production of aerosols. Paints and varnishes represented 6.1%, food and miscellaneous 7.2%, and pharmaceutical 2.1%.

In a joint statement, Urs Hauser, FEA president, and Alain D’Haese, secretary general, said the 2023-2024 period has been challenging. They noted that the EU economy is expected to grow by just 1.2% in 2024, and EU industrial producers are experiencing persistent difficulties, reflected in the lowest level of capacity utilisation – excluding Covid – in a decade.

However, they pointed to positive signs of recovery. Inflation is expected to continue its steady decline, approaching 2% in 2025, with increased private consumption and investment expected to be the main drivers of growth in 2024.

They added: “The war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East remain concerning and continue to impact our economy. Additionally, the significant investments required for security and defence are diverting funds from other important policies. We face environmental challenges of unprecedented scale and urgency.”

Despite the difficult backdrop of recent years, Hauser and D’Haese said the FEA’s statistical figures show the sector has not managed to return to the growth needed, although the cosmetics sector seems to be rebounding. “This is felt within our companies and, consequently, within our national associations.

“Adapting to these multi-crisis times is essential. Our industry and our Federation must rise to the challenge. No single organisation can effectively overcome all obstacles, so it is crucial that we remain united and leverage our collective intelligence.”
