October 19: The planning of Denmarkâs first D&I beverage can plant as first revealed by The Canmaker in July, has been confirmed by Rexam. It will be commissioned in the first half of 2009.
The plant will be built on a greenfield sit at Fredericia, a strategic location that will enable Rexam to ship cans to north European customers and relieve capacity pressures on Rexamâs plants elsewhere in Europe.
The plant represents a capital investment of £78m (US$160m) spread over three years, two thirds of which will be incurred in 2008. It will initially have a capacity of 1.2bn aluminium cans in 33cl and 50cl sizes.
