Global steel can recycling hits new record

March 20: More than 7.2 million tonnes of steel cans were recycled globally in 2007, saving about 13 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, says the Brussels-based World Steel Association (Worldsteel).
The figure represents a record average recycling rate of 68 percent, up one percentage point on 2006, for the 37 countries that report to Worldsteel and who represent about two-thirds of the packaging steel producers. It is the third consecutive year that the steel can recycling rate has increased.
