Greenhouse gas measurement to include recycling in UK

November 6: Canmakers are reviewing a UK specification for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from goods and services that appears to include recycling.

Launched last week by Hilary Benn, UK secretary of state at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and prepared by the British Standards Institution, PAS2050 has been promoted by the Carbon Trust.

Originally, recycling was not addressed in the specification and the UK canmaking industry, fearing that this would impact packaging-choice decisions throughout Europe because the Carbon Trust is keen to expand its remit outside the UK, lobbied for its inclusion.
