Growth returns to beverage cans in Europe

Sales of beverage cans in Europe grew by 5.2 percent in 2010, reaching 54.1 billion units, driven by a recovery in Germany and marked increases in shipments of cans for soft drinks.

Figures released today by Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME), which represents the leading canmakers Ball, Crown and Rexam, show gains despite the tough economic conditions last year, and shipments of cans for soft drinks were up 12.3 percent.

In the past two years the total increase in UK soft drinks can sales has been 1 billion. Now soft drinks represent more than half the UK market for cans.
