November 9: Ball Corporation’s president and chief operating officer John Hayes will become its chief executive from January 2011, with the retirement of David Hoover, it was announced yesterday.

Hoover, 65, has been chief executive since 2001 and retires as an active employee after more that 40 years with the Colorado-based canmaker, which last year had global sales of $7.35bn with operations in North and South America, Europe and Asia. He will remain as chairman.

Hayes, 44, joined Ball in 1999 from a career in investment banking, where the canmaker was one of his clients.
