Indian tinplate duty rise will hit canmakers

The Indian canmaking industry has called for an increase in import duty on tinplate to be revoked because it will “badly hit” a sector that employs about 100,000 people.

Sanjay Bhatia, who is president of the Metal Container Manufacturers Association (MCMA), said in an open letter that the industry is “deeply concerned as this will affect small industrial units across the country”.
