Koenig & Bauer launches digital printer for short runs

A digital printing system for flat sheets for integration into a metal decorating line has been launched by Germany’s Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint, which is a key supplier of high-speed offset litho presses and coaters.

Combining components from digital printing, sheet handling and system engineering, the MetJET ONE is designed to ease new customers into digitally-printed three-piece tinplate cans in short batches.

US-based Reynolds Services Inc (RSI) will carry out field tests on the system at the beginning of 2025 to validate performance and reliability under commercial operating conditions.

The sheet handling system is designed by Koenig & Bauer to handle a maximum sheet size of 1200 x 1000 mm. No special preparation is required for the surface
of the tinplate, apart from the usual pre- treatment with a basecoat.

Italy-based Durst supplied the digital inkjet technology for the multi-pass printing unit. A spokesperson for Koenig & Bauer told The Canmaker that Durst’s UV system was “the perfect base to achieve a reliable industrial printing process”, adding that it has a 900 x 1200 dpi resolution.

Samuel Teufel, product manager at Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint, said: “The design enables us to create a customised solution that fits the flexibility and print quality requirements of our customers in the metal packaging industry.”

Furthermore, its modular design enables a production line to be customised. Other units that can be added include the MetalCoat coating machine to apply varnish, inspection transport for checking the image and the sheet management systems for sheet ejection.
