January 19: Shipments of cans for soft drinks in the US enjoyed a late-season boost with a 0.3 percent increase to 14.99 billion in the last quarter of 2009.

This was against a year-end decline of 1.8 percent to 62.85 billion compared with 2008, according to the Can Manufacturers Institute, based in Washington, DC.
