Lightweight metal crowns make savings in Peru

A Peruvian canmaker has helped develop a lightweight metal crown for beer bottles that could save brewer SABMiller $12.6 million every year.

The Low-Gauge Crown is the result of collaboration between Packaging Products del Peru and packaging steel manufacturer Rasselstein. Ten percent lighter than conventional metal crowns, it was first revealed at The Canmaker Summit held in Brazil last year.

Following market tests, the crown is now being used commercially at the four breweries in Peru of Backus, a subsidiary of SABMiller, the world’s second largest beer producer.
