Meadow partners with Novelis to source more sustainable aluminium

The world’s largest aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis has signed an agreement to supply aluminium with high recycled content for Meadow’s award-winning Kapsul ‘pre-fill’ container.

Sweden-based Meadow, a packaging technology company, which won the Prototype category in the 2023 Cans of the Year at The Canmaker Summit, has focused on creating a circular, more sustainable product for the global consumer packaging market.

Novelis will now join other major companies that are supply chain partners, including Ball Corporation, DRT Holdings, and C-CARE, who are working with the five-year-old technology provider to develop a circular economy within the fast-moving consumer goods segment of the packaging industry.

Globally, can sheet from Novelis contains an average of 85% recycled content.

Meadow and Novelis will also collaborate on several “innovation and commercial initiatives as part of their strategic partnership”, according to a joint press release.

A spokesperson said: “Meadow and Novelis are working together to deliver the benefits of low CO2 and infinitely recyclable aluminum to the CPG market. As part of this, Novelis will be supporting Meadow’s technical development, exploring the recycling process of containers with Meadow technology and supporting CPG brands with their aluminum supply needs at scale.”

Meadow chief executive and co-founder Victor Ljungberg said: “Working with Novelis marks another exciting milestone for Meadow; as a world leader in aluminium recycling and rolling, Novelis brings not only deep industrial expertise, but the scale and reliability needed to support our continued commercial growth.

“Crucially, it strengthens the sustainability of our value chain, creating one of the most circular packaging solutions available today, and brings us closer to our end goal of eliminating linear packaging.”

Novelis is the largest recycler of aluminium in the world and a leading provider of flat-rolled aluminium products, recycling approximately 2.3 million tonnes of aluminium scrap annually, which includes 84 billion used beverage cans.

Novelis senior vice president and chief commercial officer Greg Schlicht commented: “We are proud to work with Meadow to deliver a sustainable packaging option for consumer household products across the globe.

“Meadow’s focus on reducing waste and improving circularity aligns perfectly with our vision to advance aluminium as the material of choice with circular solutions. Together, we are developing innovative products to create a more circular and sustainable future.”
