More tuna cannery workers to be laid off in Samoa

August 11: A US delegation last week visited the Pacific island of American Samoa to examine the tuna canning industry following confirmation that Starkist would be laying off about 350 workers from its operations there.

The Starkist decision comes three months after fellow tuna canner Chicken of the Sea said that it would be closing its Samoa Packing plant at the end of September with a loss of more than 2,000 jobs.
