December 14: Tougher regulations on the production and use of chemicals that could add huge costs to canmakers and their suppliers will come into force next June following a vote by the European Parliament yesterday.
Called Reach (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), the regulations will require industry to identify the substances it uses and manage the risks involved with their production and use.
Over a period of 11 years, around 30,000 substances currently used by industry will require registration.
