May 30: Recyclability is the most important measure of the impact of a food or drink’s packaging on the environment, according to a recent survey amongst consumers in the UK.
The survey, carried out on behalf of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA), also showed that consumers thought that wastage of food stuffs – how much of a product was thrown away before it is used because it is past its ‘best before’ date – was high on their list of key features that supermarket managers should adopt to highlight how much packaging has an effect on our surroundings.
Wastage was ahead of landfill, energy consumed in packaging production and the distance it was transported.
