September 7: What are claimed to be the first retortable peelable membrane lids for cans in the US are being made by Sonoco Phoenix at its North Canton plant in Ohio.
The ends are a version of the company’s UltraPeel end that has been modified to accommodate the heat and pressure of processing.
Sonoco Phoenix will initially focus on 211-diameter ends, but plans to introduce 307- and 401-diameter versions.
