January 18: British retailer Sainsbury’s has been accused of failing to realise that its decision to switch from metal cans to cartons for its Basics range of chopped tomatoes could increase the amount of packaging going to landfill.
The Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association said that the retailer didn’t “consider adequately the one aspect of packaging waste that makes the greatest difference to reducing the amount of packaging that goes to landfill – recycling rates”.
