July 23: Silgan, North America’s largest food canmaking company, posted better than expected financial results for the second quarter, said its chief executive Tony Allott.

Sales of food cans increased 7.4 percent in the quarter to US$405.3 million, while operating income at Silgan’s food can business increased 26.5 percent to $41.8m.

Silgan said the increase was primarily due to higher average selling prices as a result of the pass through of higher costs, and slightly higher volumes.
