November 24: Recycling rates for steel cans in Europe are exceeding EU targets because the material works better than other packaging materials in the growing numbers of household waste collection systems.
In the original member states, almost two-thirds of all steel cans were recycled last year, and the average rate across the 25 member countries was 63 percent, up six percentage points on 2004, according to the first report within the extended EU from Apeal, the association of packaging steel producers. More than 2.3 million tonnes of steel cans were recycled.
