January 8: Packaging industry revenues will rise by 23.5 percent in the five years from 2009 to 2014 to reach US$530 billion, according to a report from US-based Pike Research. The fastest growing sector within the industry will be sustainable packaging, forecasts the market intelligence firm, almost doubling in sales from $88bn to $170bn.
With the highest of recycling rates in packaging, metal offers a strong sustainability message, though Pike predicts that plastics will be the fastest growing material within the sustainable packaging sector.
