Japan-based canmaker Toyo Seikan swept the board with eight wins at the 2026 Japan Packaging Contest, taking three prizes in the technology category and five in other packaging awards.
Organised by the Japan Packaging Technology Association, Toyo Seikan’s Eco End won the Packaging Technology Award for Appropriate Packaging. The end is made in partnership with aluminium producer UACJ and also won Gold in the End, Caps and Closures category at The Canmaker Cans of the Year Awards in 2024.
Toyo Seikan said: “This next-generation aluminium beverage can lid reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 40%. By significantly increasing the amount of recycled materials used, GHG emissions per billion lids are reduced by approximately 13,000 tonnes compared to conventional beverage can lids.”
Eco End has also received other prizes, including the 50th Kinoshita Award, the 33rd Grand Prize for the Global Environment Award from the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Award, and the 2024 Japan Aluminium Association Development Award.
Commenting on the Packaging Technology Award, Toyo Seikan said: “This award is given to packages that have enhanced protective functions and appropriate use of packaging materials, resulting in superior packaging technology or superior know-how to enhance packaging functionality.”
Toyo Seikan also produces a wide range of packaging in other substrates, which also won awards at the ceremony held at the Japan Packaging Institute.
