May 25: Recycling targets for tinplate cans set by the UK government have been exceeded two years in advance.
The Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) called for a recycling rate of 54 percent to be reached in 2008.
In 2006, nearly 400,000 tonnes of steel used for packaging was recycled, according to figures released by Defra in April. That’s a rate of 57.3 percent. It’s also more than double the volume of steel recycled in 1998.
