January 25: Shipments of metal cans in the US fell below 130 billion for the first time in at least 20 years last year, according to figures released by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI).

Cans used by drinks and foods companies and for general line applications totalled 129.1 billion in 2009, a fall of 2.3 percent year on year.
