April 22: Three-piece cans made from ultra-thin 0.10mm tinplate, or substandard-quality tinplate, are welded at up to 1,000cpm by Soudronic’s Soucan 225-LT body welder.
At that guage, the metal can be torn by hand but once welded into a cylinder for a can body it still provides better strength than any other packaging.
The machine is being promoted by the Swiss company as offering similar advantages to its Soucan 1100 FB body welder, but with the added benefits of a roll former that processes non-prime tinplate, with automatic height changeovers.
