German canmaker Xtracan has been awarded The Canmaker Can of the Year for 2023 for a tinplate D&I aerosol can used by UK-based Zenova for one of its fire extinguisher products.
The Xtracan business was set up in November 2020 by Mall+Herlan, part of German-based Wifag-Polytype group, to showcase its innovative D&I tinplate aerosol can manufacturing process.
Using a system similar to making D&I beverage cans, the Hi-Flex DWI200 line forms, coats and decorates tinplate containers at its site adjacent to Mall+Herlan at Neuhausen ob Eck, in the south of Germany.
The company is focusing on the production of less commonly used 66mm-diameter cans, so as not to compete with potential customers in the market for slimmer aerosol cans used for products in the vast personal care sector.
One of these 66mm-diameter cans — necked down to create a one-inch aperture — is being used by Zenova for a fire extinguisher that is suitable for domestic use and operated with one hand. Similar products have previously been launched into the market in plastic bottles.
Dozens of other cans in a range of categories were honoured at The Canmaker Cans of the Year Awards, with the presentation taking place at a gala dinner at The Canmaker Summit held in Edinburgh, UK, on 11-12 October.
The winning cans are chosen by a panel of judges from the canmaking and design industries, with the overall Can of the Year selected from the winners in each category.
